Process Execution
The first requirement for a useful process management system is that it actually do something. In addition to tracking progress and providing task lists/notifications Vdot actually routes the data from task to task, person to person, tool to tool, and then launches the correct application with the correctly routed data. Not only does this save more time and effort than simple track and notify systems, it makes the tracking of progress automatic. People do not have to perform useful tasks, and then, separately, perform the additional task of keeping the Project Management or Workflow system up to date.
For many processes flexibility is equally important. Not everything goes as planned. Unexpected results may require different approaches than originally hoped for. The people encountering such problems must have the flexibility to modify a process while it is executing to handle the unexpected.
The ease of use designed into Vdot for process definition by end users themselves provides exactly the flexibility needed to keep the unexpected from becoming a disaster in a system that needs to go back to IT for a fix - test - release cycle while the project team sits idle. Any user with the required privileges can use the process definition features in an active process to handle unanticipated problems.
